Measurement While Drilling (MWD) & Logging While Drilling (LWD): Tools and Data Evaluation

A drilling rig is used to create a borehole (also called well or wellbore) in the earth’s sub-surface in order to extract natural resources. During such drilling, data is acquired from the drilling rig sensors for a range of purposes. The term MWD refers to directional-drilling measurements, e.g., for decision support for the smooth operation of the drilling, while LWD refers to measurements concerning the geological formation made while drilling. LWD is a technique of conveying well logging tools into the well borehole as part of the bottom hole assembly (BHA).

Proclad Academy’s MWD & LWD Tools and Data Evaluation training course is designed to familiarise engineers with all MWD and LWD tools used by the oil and gas industry. This training focuses on the data extracted from the tools, the Log Quality Control (LQC) of the data before it is used for processing, and the full data evaluation in all related engineering of the reservoirs, reserve estimates, monitoring, and other related valuations. The training will also give the essentials of the vocabulary and methods of logging technology for oilfields.

The key features of Proclad Academy’s MWD & LWD Tools and Data Evaluation training course are:

  • Decision-support to monitor and manage the smooth operation of drilling
  • Make detailed records (or well log) of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole
  • Generate operations statistics and performance benchmarks such that improvements can be identified
  • Provide well planners with accurate historical operations-performance data with which to perform statistical risk analysis for future well operations
